Dear Parents/Guardians,
It was great to have a full week of learning! We also got to attend a bullying prevention assembly with a very dynamic speaker. He gave students great advice about being proactive in confrontational situations, and having a kind heart! We finished our second fractions unit, which focused on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. The students took a test, and we started our next chapter. This chapter focuses on decimals, and how they relate to the fractions we have been learning about. Here is a great website for students to play games and practice decimal concepts throughout this chapter: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/decimals.htm Please make sure and practice multiplication and division facts at home when you can! We spent this week in Reading practicing the skill of sequencing, while learning about service dogs, guide dogs, and search-and-rescue dogs. Some students were part of assembling a maze, and writing in order the steps they would take to guide their partner through it. Other students got to be the blindfolded person, and be guided through the maze. They had to write in sequence about their experience. We also made a comic strip of the story we read, which required them to write the story in sequence and illustrate it. We also learned about adverbs. Please continue reading at home each night as much as possible! We finished our electricity unit in Science this week, and will start light and sound waves next week. We are working on descriptive paragraphs in Writing, and students got to enjoy a piece of candy as their subject for writing! Students are bringing home their new spelling list today, along with the weekly newsletter. Students will take their spelling test on Friday. Students will also have library checkout on Friday, so please help students remember to bring their books to recheck or get new ones. Some upcoming dates to notice: Carnival basket items are due by February 6th, if you are interested in donating some. Just a reminder that our theme is coffee. Thanks for those sent in already! Spring and class pictures are on February 7th , and order forms for those came home this week. You can send them in the day of pictures, or earlier if you want and I can keep them here at school The PTC carnival is February 11th. Our classroom Valentine’s Day Party will be on February 14th. I will be contacting those of you who signed up to help within the next week. Parent/Teacher Conferences will be on February 15th & 16th. There will be NO school on February 17th & 20th. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about anything. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schrant
