Dear Parents/Guardians,
The 4th graders have been busy this week between learning, field trip, spirit days, and our Halloween party this afternoon. It has been busy, but fun! Please see below for pictures of this week’s exciting events. We finished our 2 digit x 2 digit unit in Math this week, and started our long division unit. We will be spending more time with this unit, as long division can be tricky. Making sure students know their multiplication and division facts is super important right now, so please be sure and practice those at home when you can! In Reading, we focused on the skill of inferencing, which is using your background knowledge + clues from the text to answer questions about what you read. We played “Whose Hat Is It?”, and became detectives solving school mysteries to practice this skill. We also talked about simple, compound, and complex sentences. Here is a fun game to practice this skill at home: http://www.gameclassroom.com/game/45240-3483/writing-simple-and-compound-sentences/sentence-sort Please continue reading at home each night as much as possible! We started our government unit in Social Studies this week. Students worked in groups to become experts on one of the three branches of government. Then, they taught their classmates about that branch, so now everybody knows about all 3 branches. They will be making informational brochures next week to tell others about the 3 branches of government, and learning how a bill becomes a law. The weekly newsletter is coming home today, along with the weekly spelling list. Next week is a less busy week! We will have our day long Pumpkinology on Monday, where the students will rotate to all of the 4th grade teachers, doing a different pumpkin themed activity with each one. Please don’t forget to send in a pumpkin on Monday if you have not done so already, or let me know as soon as possible if you can’t so I can ensure every student has a pumpkin! We will have library checkout on Friday, so please help students remember to bring their books back to recheck or get new ones. I will send Scholastic book orders home next week, and if interested in ordering from that, please send back order form and payment by Friday. A note and “brick” are also coming home today, discussing our Veterans’ Day project. Please look over the note, and if you know a veteran you would like to honor, please fill out the brick and send it back to school. The bricks will be put together to create a wall honoring all veterans. A note about the Mayor’s Food Drive Challenge is coming home today also. Please send any canned goods you wish to donate between October 31st and December 2nd. The class with the most cans can win a pizza party with the mayor, and helping with the tree lighting downtown. Some upcoming dates to notice: November 8th is picture retakes. There is NO school on November 11th. 2nd quarter midterm reports go home on November 15th. If your child sold items for the fundraiser, they will be available for pick-up on November 16th. There is NO school November 23-28 in observance of Thanksgiving. I think that is all for this time. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about anything! Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schrant
