Dear Parents/Guardians,
It was Thanksgiving-Mania in the classroom these past two days. We did many different Thanksgiving activities, including a multiplication turkey and using grocery ads to plan and budget for a family Thanksgiving dinner. We also paraded the pod today dressed up as our book characters, and ended the day with our Boot Camp fact fluency reward movie party! In Math, we dove into our patterns and sequences unit, focusing on finding number patterns and extending them with that pattern/rule. Input and output tables are great practice for this. Here is a way students can practice this at home: http://www.mathplayground.com/functionmachine.html Please be sure and practice multiplication and division facts at home when you can! We finished our story, “The Earth Dragon Awakes”, this week in Reading, along with finishing our How To Catch A Turkey writing and craft. The students also read a story about how Benjamin Franklin believed the turkey should be a symbol for the U.S., instead of the bald eagle. Please continue reading at home each night as much as possible, and recording it on the reading logs for those students who are interested in turning them back in for a prize in December! We explored the Northeast region in Social Studies this week. We learned about the unique characteristics of the region, and what it contributes to the rest of the United States. The next day we “experienced” the region by making and wearing our Pilgrim hats to take a virtual tour of the Mayflower and its voyage. Next week we will learn about and experience the Southeast region. The weekly newsletter is coming home today, along with the spelling list for next week. Reading logs are due Thursday, for those students who chose to read and write about what they read. Next Friday we have our spelling test, and library checkout so please help students remember to bring books back to recheck or get new ones. That is also the last day for the Mayor’s Food Drive Challenge, so please keep sending in cans next week! Some upcoming dates to notice: December 16th is the end of the 2nd quarter. December 19th-January 2nd is winter vacation, and classes resume on January 3rd. I think that is all for this time. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about anything. Have a happy Thanksgiving, and know that I am thankful for the opportunity to teach your child!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schrant
