Dear Parents/Guardians,
Even though it was state assessment week, it didn’t feel as stressful because we had so much fun starting our Olympic unit! We have spent this week learning about ancient Greece and the first Olympics, specifically how Greek mythology plays into that. We kicked off the week with a torch lighting, just like the real Olympics. We watched the official torch lighting for this year’s summer Olympics in Rio. Here is the website where students can follow the torch: http://www.rio2016.com/tochaolimpica/en The students requested I put this in the email! Have them tell you everything they learned this week! Next week we will start learning about the modern Olympics! Please make sure students are reading each night for their reading log, as it is due Monday! I continue to encourage students to be reading and filling out book reviews to meet their goal of 20 books before summer for our Royal’s Reading Challenge! We didn’t learn any new math concepts this week, but instead put all of our math knowledge to work on the state assessments. I am so proud of the student’s hard work and effort! Next week in Math we will be starting an area and perimeter restaurant project. This week in Science, students spent time learning about Newton’s 3 laws of motion and gravity, specifically how these concepts will help build a roller coaster. We should be able to start building those at the end of next week after students have drafted their designs! Wax Museum presentations are next Friday from 10:00-11:00 a.m., and we look forward to seeing you all! The students spent this week choosing what facts they want to share during their presentations to people! We will continue to practice our presentations next week. The weekly business note is coming home tomorrow, along with the weekly spelling list. The pretest will be on Tuesday and the final test on Friday. Library checkout is on Wednesday, so please help students remember to bring their books back to recheck or get new ones. This will be the last library checkout for this school year! As mentioned earlier, reading logs are due on Monday. Students will also get a new book to read this summer at RIF on Monday. Field Day is on Tuesday. On the back of the business note is our schedule for the day, including where we will be at in case you would like to join us! Please remember to send a lunch (unless they signed up for a school lunch), water, sunscreen, and students need to wear a blue shirt that day! Students will have the band talk and instrument tryouts on Wednesday. The whole point of this is to see if they would be interested in taking band next year. We will watch the Health and Development film on Thursday afternoon. After Wax Museum presentations Friday morning, students will get to relax and enjoy their fact fluency reward in the afternoon! Some upcoming dates to notice:
Students will go to a leadership assembly on May 9th. This was the assembly that was rescheduled from last week. All library books are due on May 12th. May 18th is the last day of school, and it is a half day. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about anything! Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schrant
