Dear Parents/Guardians,
The first full week of school flew by! We started digging into our curriculum, and did many fun activities to reinforce the skills we are learning. We started our place value unit in Math. The students have worked on reading and writing multi-digit numbers, comparing and ordering numbers, and rounding numbers. We will review this next week and have our first test. Students could show off these skills at home by finding larger numbers in a magazine or newspaper, cutting them out, and then reading them to you, writing them in expanded form, comparing them, and rounding them to a certain place value! We are also doing bi-weekly multiplication tests, where the students are working towards a reward party that will take place in November! Please practice multiplication and division facts at home as much as possible, whether that be in the form of flash cards or fun apps/computer games. More information about the reward party will come home next week. In Reading, we focused on identifying and describing the characters, setting, and plot in a story. Students did this in pairs with picture books, and we did it as a whole class with “Because of Winn-Dixie.” I encourage 10-15 minutes of reading each night to build stamina, and to prevent reading level backslide. Students will be receiving their first reading log next week, and more information will come to you about that then as well. We worked on writing complete, descriptive sentences this week, while also identifying subjects and predicates. We started our economics unit in Social Studies. Students will be creating their own candy business, filling out a business plan, and learning about how the economy works in the next few weeks! The weekly newsletter is coming home with students today. This shows their specials for next week so they know when to bring tennis shoes. We will also have library checkout every Friday, so students need to remember to bring books back to recheck or get new ones. Students are also bringing home the spelling list for next week. Final tests are always on Friday. Please remind them to study several times throughout the week! Some upcoming dates to notice: Next Friday, September 2nd is PTC Sonic Night! Some of the proceeds from that night come back to benefit the elementary school. Come out and support TES, while watching me attempt to be a carhop! There is NO school on September 5th because of Labor Day. September 9th is Grandparents’ Day from 1-2 p.m. September 16th is the homecoming parade, which we will get to watch! I think that is all for this time. As always, please let me know any questions or concerns you have. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schrant
