Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are back in the swing of things here at TES after Spring Break, and ready to take on the last nine weeks! We ended the week by celebrating Triple A for those who earned it during the 3rd quarter. Just a reminder that to earn the Triple A reward students have to get A’s, B’s, and C’s on their report card, have no minuses on the behavior standards, and have good attendance. I encourage every student to work extra hard these last nine weeks so they can earn Triple A for the fourth quarter! In Reading this week we focused on looking at an author’s claim or belief, and how they proved that in their writing. We looked at a school uniform debate, and a more P.E. in schools debate. The students looked at the different author claims, and the evidence they used to support it. The students then gave their claim on the issues, and used evidence from the articles they read to support their claim. They even wrote letters to Mr. Poell explaining why we needed more P.E. time. Here is the commercial we used to kick-off this reading skill that the students loved: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQTsue0lKBk The students could make a video at home similar to this, giving reasons and evidence of their belief about something at home! Please make sure students are reading each night for their reading log. I continue to encourage students to be reading and filling out book reviews to meet their goal of 20 books before summer for our Royal’s Reading Challenge! We have a student who has finished the challenge, and several that are close! We started metric measurement in Math this week, and even though this isn’t the common system for the U.S. the students found it much easier and wondered why we don’t use it more! Very thought-provoking! Here are some online activities students can play to reinforce these skills: http://mrnussbaum.com/soup/ We returned to Social Studies this week, focusing on westward expansion and the Louisiana Purchase. The students even filled out a check as Thomas Jefferson to give to France for the land! We start this unit with these topics so students understand why pioneers traveled the trails West. Next week, we will focus on Louis and Clark, and the Oregon Trail. We will be doing different simulations so students can make decisions like the pioneers would have, and we will be cooking a pioneer recipe! Please see below for students learning about vocabulary words related to these topics, and the pictures they drew to help remember the meaning of the words. We started our Wax Museum research and writing this week! We have drafted our topic sentence, our first two paragraphs, and our timeline! The students get so excited to do this each day, and we are making great progress! Remember the only component at home is figuring out how to “get into character” for the presentation day, and any additional research students want to do. The weekly business note is coming home today, along with the weekly spelling list. The pretest will be on Tuesday and the final test on Friday. Library checkout is on Wednesday, so please help students remember to bring their books back to recheck or get new ones. We will be taking the Reading State Assessment on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday next week. Please make sure students get a good night’s rest the night before, and a healthy breakfast the morning of. Encourage them to take their time and do their best work! March reading logs are due next Friday, so please help students to remember to turn those in as they are for a grade.
Some upcoming dates to notice:
4th quarter midterm reports go home on April 13th. There is NO school on April 15th for students. The PTC Sock Hop is April 22nd. We will be taking Math State Assessments April 25-28. Fine Arts Night is April 28th from 5-7 p.m. here at TES! As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about anything! Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schrant
