Dear Parents/Guardians,
It has been a week of starting new units in each subject area! We started multiplying multi-digit numbers in Math this week, starting with 10s, 100s, and 1000s. We played a math version of Connect 4 to reinforce this topic. We will continue on next week with this topic. Please continue practicing multiplication and division facts at home, as they are very useful for almost every topic we cover in 4th grade Math! We took our previous knowledge of characters, setting, and plot and combined them this week in Reading. The students loved reading a story called “Invasion from Mars.” Then they made a storyboard poster to describe the characters, setting, and plot of the story. They love anytime they can incorporate drawing into their writing! They can make storyboards at home when they finish books! Please make sure students are reading 10-15 minutes each night, and recording it on their reading log! Reading logs are due on Monday! We also learned about the different types of verbs this week. We acted out action verbs, and made paper chains to show linking verbs. Here is a fun computer game the students can play to practice this: http://www.softschools.com/language_arts/grammar/verb/balloon_game/ We started our Westward Expansion unit in Social Studies this week. We have talked about why people moved West, the struggles that came with that, and some terms used back then that they will need to know. We will move on to talking about the Louisiana Purchase next week, and mapping out the trails taken by the pioneers. The weekly newsletter is coming home today, along with the weekly spelling list. The final spelling test will be on Friday. The newsletter also shows the specials for next week. We will also have library checkout every Friday, so help students remember to bring their books back to recheck or get new ones. Please remind students that they need to complete the writing activity on the back of the October form, and bring it in so we can approve the costume choice. Please also let me know if for any reason your child cannot bring a lunch from home on our field trip date, and I will make sure they get a sack lunch from school. We will have our fundraiser kickoff assembly on Monday afternoon, and I will be emailing you information about that next week. Individual student pictures are on Tuesday. Please send in order forms that day if interested in ordering the pictures. The students have Health homework and their All About Me posters due on Wednesday. Our music program is at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Students need to report to the classroom by 6:15 p.m. I will be sending home Scholastic book orders at the beginning of next week. If interested in ordering from those, they will be due with payment by next Friday. Some upcoming dates to notice: October 11th is the end of the first quarter! Parent teacher conferences are October 12th and 13th. There is NO school on October 14th. Our field trip to Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop is on October 25th. We will leave at 8:45 a.m. and arrive back around 12:45 p.m. I was only allowed to bring two parents, and have notified those going. Our classroom Halloween party will be on October 28th, and I will be in contact with those who signed up to help in the coming weeks. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about anything! Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schrant
