Dear Parents/Guardians,
It was great to see the students after a week off for Spring Break! Remember that tonight is PTC Sonic Night, where some of the proceeds come back to benefit TES, and the teachers are the carhops! If they would like to see me, I will be working from 5-6 p.m. We spent the week starting new units in each subject area. In Reading, we reviewed nonfiction text features, and how they help us understand nonfiction text better. Students did a text feature puzzle, matching activity, and scavenger hunt in their book. We also worked on coming up with words and their meanings based on three different prefixes. Please continue reading at home each night as much as possible. In Math, we started our perimeter and area unit. Students have been finding the perimeter and area of different squares and rectangles. Next week, they will be taping off the classroom floor in different squares and rectangles for their classmates to find the perimeter and area of! Here is a website students can use to practice this skill at home: https://www.funbrain.com/poly/ Students could also pick items or parts of their home, inside or outside, and measure the length and width to find the perimeter and area! Please make sure and practice multiplication and division facts at home when you can, especially because we started Boot Camp again this week! In Science, we started our Earth Science unit. We focused on fossils, and how they can help us study the Earth, and show changes in it. We did a cookie fossil dig experiment. Next week, we will focus on weathering and erosion. In Writing, we started our Wax Museum projects. Students are spending time each day writing about their person of choice. We spent this week writing about their schooling and family, as well as what specifically makes them famous, and what impact they had on the world. Students need to make sure they have their Wax Museum book completely read, and bring it to school every day! They are also encouraged to do outside research on their person! Students are bringing home a spelling list, and their test will be next Friday. Students are also bringing home the weekly newsletter. I will be sending Scholastic book orders home on Monday, and if interested in ordering from those, please send in order form and payment by next Friday. We are taking our Reading State Assessments next Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00 p.m. We discussed the importance of assessments this week, and I set goals with the students for what level they would like to score in. I am also sending home test taking strategies today. Please look over those with your child, and encourage them to do their best! Please also make sure they get plenty of rest the night before, and healthy breakfast and lunch the day of. We will have library checkout next Friday, so please help students remember to bring their books back to recheck or get new ones. Some upcoming dates to notice: April 12th is when 4th quarter midterm reports and behavior standards will go home. There is NO SCHOOL for students on April 14th. Math State Assessments are April 18th and 20th. The PTC Sock Hop is on April 21st. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about anything. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schrant
