Dear Parents/Guardians,
This short week went by quickly, but a great deal of fun was had, and we ended the week with a day full of St. Patrick’s Day fun! We started the day with an assembly, with the purpose being to get students motivated to do their best on state assessments. They learned about the incentives that come with doing your best on the assessments. Then, we used our reading and math knowledge to make a leprechaun while enjoying our donuts from Dollar Donut Day, and spent the afternoon having the 3rd quarter Triple A celebration, which was all St. Patrick’s Day themed. Students who made Triple A made salt dough shamrocks, made leprechaun traps with “bait”, and made a rainbow snack to enjoy! Thanks to those of you who sent in items to help with these activities. It is greatly appreciated! A fun time was had by hall. I continue to encourage students to work hard 4th quarter, so they can enjoy the last Triple A of the school year in May. Don’t forget about Family Fun, Food, & Fitness Night tonight at TES from 6-8 p.m.!
This week in Math, we finished and tested over our metric measurement unit. After Spring Break, we will start our next unit which focuses on perimeter and area. Please practice multiplication and division facts at home as much as possible! We finished our current story in Reading, while reviewing the skills of cause/effect and inferencing. Here is a fun game to practice the skill of cause and effect at home: http://roomrecess.com/mobile/CauseEffect/play.html Please continue to read at home as much as possible! We finished typing and illustrating our color poems this week, and the class book was sent off to the publisher! We also finished our personal narratives, so now after Spring Break we can spend our Writing time working on our Wax Museum project. We finished our plants/animals unit in Science this week as well. We talked more about how plant and animal traits help them adapt to their environment. Students created a critter that could survive in an assigned ecosystem. They had to draw the critter, and write about the traits they gave it. They also experimented with different “bird beaks” to see how different beaks serve different purposes based on habitat. We ended with a discussion about life cycles, and did a bird migration simulation to demonstrate this. Here are the links to animal and plant adaptations videos and activities students could look at during Spring Break! http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/animals/animal-adaptations.htm, http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/plants/plant-adaptations.htm After Spring Break, we will start a weathering and erosion unit.
Students are bringing home a spelling list today. These are the words for the week we return from Spring Break. This should give students plenty of time to study! Students are also bringing home the newsletter, highlighting the events for the week we return from Spring Break. We will have library checkout on Friday, so please help students remember to bring back their books to recheck or get new ones. They did check out this week, so they should have new reading material for break! PTC Sonic Night is that Friday, March 31st. Some of the proceeds from that night come back to help TES, and you have the opportunity to have teachers as carhops! Some upcoming dates to notice: April 4th is the first ELA State Assessment. April 6th is the second part of the ELA State Assessment. April 12th is when 4th Quarter Midterm Reports go home. There is NO school April 14. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about anything. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schrant
