Dear Parents/Guardians,
State assessments are over! I am very proud of the students, and the hard work and effort they put in this week! Now we can relax, and finish the year with fun activities and projects! In Reading, we started a new story, and focused on author’s purpose. The story was about school in the past and future, and the nonfiction article that connected to our story was about the history of toys. We watched a short video clip about the evolution of toys, and students wrote a journal entry about their favorite toy of all time and why. They really enjoyed this week’s story and activities! Here is an author’s purpose battleship game students can play at home to practice this skill: https://www.quia.com/ba/72070.html Please continue reading at home each night as much as possible. State assessments took up most of our Math time this week, but we still learned a few new geometry topics, like how to identify triangles, and solving angle word problems. At home, students could make you triangles out of toothpicks, and have you guess whether it is right, acute, or obtuse! Please make sure and practice multiplication and division facts at home when you can. In Science, we focused on how natural disasters affect the surface of the Earth. Students spent the week designing and building a structure that could withstand an earthquake. We then tested the building to see how well they did. We also talked about renewable and nonrenewable resources, and ways we can save energy. Today, students built solar ovens, and next week we will test them by making s’mores and watching the oven melt them. We will also be starting our last unit of Science, which focuses on force and motion. In Writing, we started the rough drafts of our Wax Museum writing. We will finish those next week, and begin typing! Please see the note that came home this week about costumes for Wax Museum, and see the formal invitation sent home today! We hope you can join us on May 12th to see all of the hard work students have put into this project. Students are bringing home a spelling list, and the weekly newsletter. Students will get to go to RIF on Monday, and get a new book for the summer and some popcorn. That is also the Dental Heath Card deadline, if anybody has any pink dentist cards to turn in. Tuesday, students will get to watch the all school Music Memory Competition. The spelling test will be next Friday, along with library checkout. Please help make sure students bring their books to recheck or get new ones. Some upcoming dates to notice: May 2nd is Field Day, and we were assigned to wear yellow shirts. Students will also need to bring their own water bottle from home that day! May 4th is Fine Arts Night. May 9th will be when students hear about band for next year, and get to try out instruments. May 10th is when all library books are due, as well as the final Battle of the Books Challenge. May 12th is our Wax Museum presentations from 10:00-11:20, and you are welcome to attend. May 12th is also our fact fluency Boot Camp reward party. That is all for this week! As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about anything. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schrant
